i knew... just didn't know much

i remember asking a friend once if my internet provider can tell and keep a record of what websites i view. well he said no. i didn't think so. i looked. i expected to find a simple "yes" but was surprised to find that a lot of detail can be put together by just recording what websites i visit or by tracking my search words. ahem! it freaks me out that anyone and everyone can know me!! probably quite intimately too. talk about, then, following a "secret cult"...

i have always had qualms about putting up information online; not just personal stuff, even mundane things like what i eat... ! constantly being told to be careful on the internet. poachers, hackers, abusers. now it's come down to watching out for advertisers, companies, organizations too. where are we headed?

hi shweta...

i was just thinking the other day...what if i wanted to do something on the net anonymously - post a blog, leak information to the media, etc. - what would i do? I imagine I could be tracked via my IP address. So I just go to the library! But if "they" really wanted to find me, I'm sure there are closed circuit cameras at the library and at various points on the way! Being paranoid sucks but how can you not in this day and age?

I agree with you. Is it not freaky that you can be found unless you are "trained" to blend in? It is not just the internet or the new media. New technology while making our lives easier is progressively creating new issues of privacy. I found this interesting article on csmonitor.com [ http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/0628/p15s01-ussc.html ] discussing and citing examples of privacy fall out. It talks about how stronger measures are needed to protect individuals. Towards the end, find some ways that you can (or try to) keep your personal information private.
